The November, 2025 implementation of CMMC requirements in DoD contracts is discouraging many small contractors from seeking,or even continuing, work for the DoD or DoW. It is estimated that 30% of contractors may leave. These fears may be overblown, at least for the 103,010 small contractors estimated to be subject to CMMC Level 1 and the dreaded "annual affirmation" of "continuous compliance." As one responder to the CMMC draft put it, "this will make every DIB CISO into a criminal". Not quite. See details at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/7996439560467482371
The DoD estimates that CMMC assessments will cost typical small contractors $109,000 over 3 years. However, 58% of federal contractors have fewer than 6 staff. About 45% make less than $250,000 from federal contracts.
